La Communidad del Sur (Uruguay-Sweden-Uruguay) as an example of long-lasting voluntary utopian community (from 1954 to the present day)

Abstract

The Comunidad del Sur (Montevideo) is a long-lasting voluntary community (active from the 1950s to the present day). It has withstood removals (in particular to Sweden) and has given birth to activities that are still significant to the Rio de la Plata. This integral community (as regards the cultural, productive, and living environment) of anarchist background, has opened up to the southern neighborhood where it originated and established ties with anarchist groups, cooperatives, organizations and other communities... It welcomes local citizens, activists, scholars, professionals (especially from group psychology). It links research, work, with leisure and rejoicings. The individual’s autonomy, in symbiosis with a rich collective life, is practically never crushed by the group. Pluralist, practical, progressive, and always libertarian, this community is a rara avis in the usually frozen utopian worlds.
